Gender Identity @ NQAF 2003
(May 1, 2003 - San Francisco) Produced each year during Pride month by the Queer Cultural Center, the National Queer Arts Festival celebrates and promotes the work of local, national and internationally acclaimed queer artists. Since 1998, NQAF has showcased some of the best professional and emerging artists in the queer community, including internationally renowned artists Bill T. Jones, Meredith Monk, Alice Walker, Marga Gomez, Adrienne Rich, and the late Lou Harrison. The month long festival presents spoken word performances, multimedia work, visual art exhibitions, dance, theater, comedy, literature and poetry readings, video screenings, opera, and a wide array of multidisciplinary programs featuring artists discussing their work.
Each year, NQAF invites artists to explore a topic that resonates within the queer community, asking how the topic affects their work as queer artists, and how it mirrors their differences or sameness in the larger world. The topic this year is gender identity, and includes highlights such as homo hip hop, tranny glam rock, explorations of the femme experiences of men, transsexual women, and sex workers, visual art reflecting shifts in gender experiences, spoken word, theater and performances about sex and gender from those whose very existence questions and challenges societal norms. The pride of Pride month, this is one Festival NOT to be missed!
For complete schedule of events, reservations and more information, please call (415) 33400-Qcc, or visit www.queerculturalcenter.org. Tickets can be purchased in advance starting May 1st, online at www.queerculturalcenter.org, by email at Qcc@queerculturalcenter.org, by phone, or in person at the venues one hour prior to event.
"Gender identity has emerged as a defining part of the queer community in recent years, engulfing and embracing ideas such as butch/femme from dyke culture, and daddy/boy from leather play. Outside of the constraint visited on mainstream concepts of gender, the queer continuum revels in paradox, defying definition." Kriss De Jong & Eliot K Daughtry of Killer Banshee Studios.

BRAZEN FEMMES: QUEERING FEMININITY - Anna Camilleri, Chloë Brushwood Rose and Michelle Tea.
From Canada! Brazen Femme: Queering Femininity is an undeniably celebratory and deeply troubling, sharp-edged collection of fiction, prose poetry, personal essay, photographs, and illustration revealing the un-hyphenated femme experience emerging in performance, betrayal, violence, humor, and survival. Brazen Femme recognizes femme as an identity in flux and in motion, as constantly being reinvented. The collection includes the entertaining and challenging work of writers and artists whose stories are missing from existing explorations of femme that exclude experiences of men, transsexual women, and sex workers. Whether by choice or necessity, these frenzied femmes each explore their desires to make (and remake) femininity fit their own queer frames. Darlings, drag queens, whores, and action heroes...a femme by any other name is spectacular. Brazen Femme has been nominated for a Lambda Award. The event will be held at the SF LGBT Community Cente, Ceremonial Room, 1800 Market @ Octavia, SF. Tickets are $10-$20 sliding scale. Info & Box (415) 3340-Qcc or www.queerculturalcenter.org.

RECEPTION FOR EG: (r)EVOLUTION OF GENDER
Visual Arts Exhibition Examining Gender Identity in the Queer Community
This exhibit focuses on artists that work with gender and how their perceptions of gender have changed over time. Whether androgynous, non-gendered, role-based, transgender, or transsexual, each artist in this exhibition explores gender identity and structures in their visual work. Artists working with gender related themes across more than one body of work will be showcased along with emerging artists, bringing a fresh view to the gender spectrum. Major emphasis on work providing visual evidence of a shift or change in gender awareness, roles, and identity, positions this show to provoke answers to questions barely asked: Does a shift in gender experience provide a discernable visual transcript? Does gender identity influence and change an artistÕs self-perception and work over time? Visual Artists include Tammy Rae Carland, Jordy Jones, Tim Taylor, Jenny Michals, Teri Claude Dowling, Hein Nguyen, Eliot K. Daughtry, and Kriss De Jong. Curated by Kriss De Jong & Eliot K. Daughtry of Killer Banshee Studios. Exhibition at SomArts/Rear Gallery through June 29th. The event will be held at SomArts/Rear Gallery, 934 Brannan Street @ 8th, SF. Tickets are FREE. Saturday, June 14th 3:00-5:00pm - Guided Tour & Discussion. Tickets are $5. Info & Box (415) 3340-Qcc or www.queerculturalcenter.org.
Sunday, June 8th 7:00pm
