The opera is based on Gaspar de AlbaÕs historical novel, Sor Juana's Second Dream. Known as Mexico's Tenth Muse and the first great Latin American poet, Sor Juana Inez de la Cruz was also a philosopher, playwright, feminist and Catholic nun, who rocked the church and the literary world with her quill and ink in 17th Century New Spain. Her work was banned in her native country for her secular writings, which consisted of romantic love poetry to another woman, la Condesa de Paredes. This event is co-produced by QueLACo (Queer Latino/a Artists Coalition) and Qcc.

Despite, or perhaps because of, its dual roots of innovation and improvisation, jazz music can be a macho world of musical one-upmanship, yielding little space to queer or female performers. San Francisco's "crown prince of vocals," Cedric Brown, breaks down traditional notions of jazz musicians while maintaining the integrity of the music. Inspired by the lives of black gay musicians Billy Strayhorn and Andy Bey, in I Swing Like That, Brown will explore how identity expresses itself through the stories of jazz standards and original music, accompanied by the 1150 Trio (Elise Giancola, Jory Cunningham, and Glen Iwaoka). Cedric Brown is a JSC The Best of AIRspace Artists in Residence
