Queer comedy & theater @ NQAF 2003 !

Queer comedy & theater @ NQAF 2003 !
Marga Gomez, Monica Palacios, Carmelita Tropicana; Mr. Murray Hill & the Wau-Wau Sisters; Hanifah Walidah; Veronica Combs; INTERCOURSE, many others!

(May 1, 2003 -- San Francisco) Produced each year during Pride month by the Queer Cultural Center (Qcc), the National Queer Arts Festival (NQAF) celebrates and promotes the work of local, national and international queer artists, and is dedicated to encompassing the queer community's full diversity and artistry. Like past years, NQAF 2003 shows a strong contingent of nationally known and locally grown masters & mistresses of comedy and theater celebrating the power of laughter and the experience of being queer. From New York, the much celebrated MR. MURRAY HILL & THE FABULOUS WAU-WAU SISTERS bring their jaw-dropping-death-defying blend of variety and trapeze to their world premier performance; MARGA GOMEZ, MONICA PALACIOS & CARMELITA TROPICANA, pour it on with blistering diva stand-up comedy, while HANIFAH WALIDAH gives it to us straight (so to speak) in her ground-breaking "guide to gay black folk"; here to challenge stereotypes from those whose very existence questions societal norms, is INTERCOURSE, with performances reflecting the queer spectrum of experiences with hip hop, song, burlesque and more; and for those who like it HOT, VERONICA COMBS and Liquid Fire Productions presents an evening of seductive performance with WET! (we'll let you figure that one out). NQAF 2003 kicks off with the THE Q BALL on Saturday, May 31st, at The SF LGBT Community Center @ 6pm (1800 Market Street @ Octavia) with FREE food and drink, performances, music, and more! NQAF 2003 festivities continue through June 29th in various venues throughout San Francisco.

For complete schedule of events, reservations and more information, please visit the festival website at www.queerculturalcenter.org. Tickets can be purchased in advance starting May 1st, online at www.queerculturalcenter.org, by phone at (415) 3340-Qcc, by email at Qcc@queerculturalcenter.org, or in person at the venues one hour prior to event.

FROM NEW YORK! A historic event you dare not miss! For the first time ever, the nation's most celebrated Latina legends of queer comedy - Marga Gomez, Monica Palacios, and Carmelita Tropicana - will take to the same stage, proving Marga has flava, Monica has spice, and Tropicana has juice. Representing their Mexican, Cuban, Puerto Rican and Gemini heritage with material as fresh as they are, these caliente mamacitas will do solo turns and come together in an explosive configuration of satire that even the US census bureau never counted on. This is comedy guaranteed to lower cholesterol and improve your partner's sex drive. These East and West Coast Divas unite to deliver the best in stand up and sketch comedy, por favor! All performances will be in English for the Espanol challenged. In January, Marga, Carmelita and Monica were awarded for their long careers as Out Latina Artists by LLEGO, a national LGBT Latino Organization. Monica has also been awarded a Rockefeller Fellowship, Carmelita is the recipient of Off-Broadway's Obie Award and Marga has been chosen to serve as Grand Marshall of the 2003 SF Pride March. Friday performance ASL interpreted. Co-sponsored by QueLACo (Queer Latino/a Artists Coalition).

Featuring Leslie Feinberg on Friday night, Kate Bornstein on Saturday night! Thea Hillman presents Intercourse - two nights of performances about sex and gender from those whose very existence questions and challenges societal norms. With spoken word, hip hop, song, burlesque, and an occasional violin, Intercourse will raise awareness about our worlds and our issues, as well as build bridges within the queer community. Each evening will showcase a different cast of performers including Ryka Aoki, Kate Bornstein, Cheryl Chase, Leslie Feinberg, Michelle Garcia, katastrophe (rocco kayiatos), Yoseñio V. Lewis, Joey Stephenson, Marcus Rene Van, and Hida Viloria. Building on the sold-out Intercourse 2001, the evenings promise to once again be landmark events that truly celebrate our communities. Both nights will be wheelchair accessible and Saturday's performance will be ASL interpreted.

Poet, musician, and actress Hanifah Walidah performs her highly praised multi-character one-woman show. The place is Anyblock, USA. There is Dee, who runs the neighborhood daycare and takes care of all the 9-5 mama's babies. There's the Cheatam clan, who runs the Friday fish-fry. There's Top Pop the elder (nobody knows how old exactly), Cuzin' Puddin', a social worker and Top Pop's favorite manchild. Just down the block is Lynn who sells incense, books, and loves ladies with pretty feet. Across the street is the Church of Love Everlasting with Pastor Ebonise Preeds. And at the end of the block there is The Last Stop, where Ms. Invincible stands on a soap box that reads "Say Yo' Peace" and speaks to the one who counts the stars. Presented by Brava Theater Center, Hanifah is a recipient of a Qcc Creating Queer Community grant.

THREE SHEETS TO THE WIND - Mr. Murray Hill & the Wau-Wau Sisters in World Premiere!
Thursday-Friday, June 26th-27th 8:00pm
SomArts Theater, 934 Brannan St @ 8th, SF
Tickets: $12 in advance/$15 at the door
Qcc Info & Box (415) 3340-Qcc; Qcc@queerculturalcenter.org; www.queerculturalcenter.org

FROM NEW YORK! New York nightlife icon Murray Hill hosts this jaw dropping three person variety show with a few cheesy songs, plenty of audience participation, and his irrepressible shtick, while the world-renowned Wau-Wau Sisters perform death-defying trapeze routines in skimpy outfits, rock their electric guitars, and dress as Catholic school girls for an acrobatic floor routine-slash-striptease. It's also the story of how Murray came to meet the Sisters, including Murray gate-crashing their show and falling head over spiel for the Sisters when he discovered their talent for mixing martinis and smoking Pall Malls while in handstands. After a late night of boozing and carousing, these three reigning New York alternative acts, decided it was their calling to do a show together and spread their brand of unique entertainment to the nice people of San Francisco for the premiere of "Three Sheets to the Wind."

NQAF's producing entity, the Queer Cultural Center (Qcc), is a multiracial community building organization that fosters the artistic, economic and cultural development of San FranciscoÕs queer arts community. Qcc's programs promote the careers of LGBT artists, and serve queer and non-queer audiences alike. Supporters of NQAF 2003 include the California Arts Council, Grants for the Arts, San Francisco Arts Commission, Rainbow Grocery, Horizons Foundation, Open Meadows Foundation, Astraea Foundation, Bayview Opera House, Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts, SomArts, Hispanics in Philanthropy, SF Weekly and the Zellerbach Family Fund.
