black Artists stride on out @ NQAF 2003!
Produced each year during Pride month by the Queer Cultural Center (Qcc), the National Queer Arts Festival (NQAF) celebrates and promotes the work of local, national and international queer artists, and is dedicated to encompassing the queer community's full diversity. Like past years, NQAF 2003 shows a strong contingent of Black artists such as Hanifah Walidah, brOTHERs, B/GLAM, Veronica Combs, Cedric Brown and others! This company of stylin' performers, writers, singers and visual artists challenge, address, explore and celebrate their experiences of being Black and Queer. NQAF 2003 includes a wide array of multidisciplinary art and programs, and this year's festival will kick off with the THE Q BALL on Saturday, May 31st, at The SF LGBT Community Center @6pm (1800 Market Street @ Octavia) with FREE food and drink, performances, music, and more! NQAF 2003 festivities continue through June 29th in various venues throughout San Francisco.

WET: A cabaret-style performance event featuring queer women of color, performing sexy, steamy, in-your-face spoken word, poetry, music, dance and song pieces that will taunt and tease you! Taking It to the Street - Sketches, Poems and Monologues with the brOTHERs
brOTHERs is a year old theatrical performance and spoken word collective of artists of color from a variety of cultures, races, classes and creeds, who fall somewhere on the spectrum from masculine female to transman. With a mission of Opening The Heart and Erasing Restrictive Stereotypes surrounding gender identity, race and sexuality, their work challenges the many misconceptions about who they are as women born/male identified people of color. Straight Black Folks' Guide to Gay Black Folks - Hanifah WalidahÕs One Woman Show
Poet, musician, and actress Hanifah Walidah performs her highly praised multi-character one-woman show. The place is Anyblock, USA. There is Dee, who runs the neighborhood daycare and takes care of all the 9-5 mama's babies. There's the Cheatam clan, who runs the Friday fish-fry. There's Top Pop the elder (nobody knows how old exactly), Cuzin' Puddin', a social worker and Top Pop's favorite manchild, and other great characters! Uniquely telling both forgotten and new stories of Black Gay Men, this two-day celebration of word and performance, features some of the most dynamic working artists in the Bay Area. As always, B/GLAM broadens the brush stroke, sings the new song, and dances the familiar and the new dance, all at the intersections of blackness, affection, family, community and love. I Swing Like That: An Exploration of Jazz and Identity - Written and Performed by Cedric Brown and Accompanied by the 1150 Trio
Cedric Brown, breaks down traditional notions of jazz musicians while maintaining the integrity of the music. Inspired by the lives of black gay musicians Billy Strayhorn and Andy Bey, in I Swing Like That, Brown will explore how identity expresses itself through the stories of jazz standards and original music, accompanied by the 1150 Trio (Elise Giancola, Jory Cunningham, and Glen Iwaoka). Desire and Creation: An Anti-Oppressionist Dream of Motherhood - Queer Parenting and the Magic of Motherhood
In Desire and Creation, Saun-Toy Latifa Trotter explores the concept of motherhood "within the context of race, homophobia, militarism, and patriarchy." She says, "I am deeply curious about the untold stories of mothers and mothers-to-be. This performance will uncover the political and ethical dilemmas of choosing to bring life into a society that does not always love me or any child that I would birth as a queer-colored-single-woman.
