ASIAN Artists Come Out @ NQAF 2003 !

Purple Moon, Steamroller, R. Zamora Linmark & Lisa Asagi, Debby Kajiyama, Ryka Aoki, Michelle Ito, Joel Tan, and others!

(May 1, 2003 - San Francisco) Produced each year during Pride month by the Queer Cultural Center (Qcc), the National Queer Arts Festival (NQAF) celebrates and promotes the work of local, national and international queer artists, and is dedicated to encompassing the queer community's full diversity. Like past years, NQAF 2003 has a strong showing of Asian artists such as Purple Moon, Steamroller, R. Zamora Linmark & Lisa Asagi, Debby Kajiyama, Ryka Aoki, Michelle Ito, Joel Tan, and others! These artists bring poignant imagery, dramatic performance, and powerful word to the festival to address and explore the experiences and challenges of being Asian and queer. NQAF 2003 includes a wide array of multidisciplinary art and programs, and this year's festival will kick off with the THE Q BALL on Saturday, May 31st, at The SF LGBT Community Center @ 6pm (1800 Market Street @ Octavia) with FREE food and drink, performances, music, and more! NQAF 2003 festivities continue through June 29th in various venues throughout San Francisco.

GREATER THAN THE SUM OF OUR PARTS - Purple Moon Dance Project
Purple Moon Dance Project presents "Greater Than The Sum Of Our Parts", a concert of original works rooted in Asian and Pacific Islander dance, music and storytelling traditions, featuring LGBT Canadian and American Asian and Pacific Islander artists. Bay Area dancer Arthi Varma performs original choreography rooted in the Bharatanatyam style; Sedrick Vanisi, a Tongan Pacific Islander performs "Mini Me and Me"; Vancouver-based dancer/choreographer Alvin Tolentino performs "Volt #4"; Canadian Nishihara & Kage Duo stage work for piano and Japanese Taiko drum; and Jill Togawa brings together all of the artists in a new work performed to Nishihara & Kage Duo's Three Movement Khatchaturian Sonata, with Purple Moon core artists Frances Sedayao and Sharon Sato. R. Zamora Linmark & Lisa Asagi - Selected Readings from E.S.L., Leche, and Other Works
R. Zamora Linmark will be reading from his poetry collection, E. S. L., and from his forthcoming novel, LECHE. He will be joined by Lisa Asagi, who will read from recent works and her work-in-progress. This event will be held at SomArts, 934 Brannan Street @ 8th Street. Tickets are FREE. Intercourse: A Sex and Gender Recipe for Revolution
Performances Reflecting Intersex, Transgender, Transsexual, and Genderqueer Experiences.
Featuring Leslie Feinberg on Friday night, Kate Bornstein on Saturday night! Thea Hillman presents Intercourse - two nights of performances about sex and gender from those whose very existence questions and challenges societal norms. With spoken word, hip hop, song, burlesque, and an occasional violin, Intercourse will raise awareness about our worlds and our issues, as well as build bridges within the queer community. Each evening will showcase a different cast of performers including Ryka Aoki, Cheryl Chase, Michelle Garcia, katastrophe (rocco kayiatos), Yoseñio V. Lewis, Joey Stephenson, Marcus Rene Van, and Hida Viloria. Building on the sold-out Intercourse 2001, the evenings promise to once again be landmark events that truly celebrate our communities. Both nights will be wheelchair accessible and Saturday's performance will be ASL interpreted. This event will be held at The SF LGBT Community Center/Ceremonial Room, 1800 Market @ Octavia Street. Fresh Meat 2003 - A Trans and Queer Cabaret Extravaganza
The runaway hit of the 2002 National Queer Arts Festival returns with another outstanding cabaret multidisciplinary and multimedia extravaganza! Fresh Meat 2003 brings together the Bay Area's hottest transgendered and queer performers, offering audiences a smorgasbord of homo hip hop, cutting-edge modern dance, all-girl breakdance, steamy tango, femme/butch spoken word, tranny glam rock, and the world's first transgendered gospel choir. Fresh Meat artists include: Marcus Rene Van, Veronica Combs, Sean Dorsey, Shawna Virago and The Deadly Nightshade Family, Jose Navarrete and Debby Kajiyama, Sisterz of the Underground, STEAMROLLER Dance Company, Angelo Hannah, Tina DÕElia, Michelle Ito, Jaycub Perez, JenRO, and the Transcendence Gospel Choir. Queer Masala - Queer South Asian Films & Discussions
What's it like to be South Asian and queer? This program will include shorts that explore South Asian queer identities across the South Asian diaspora, from the U.K. to New Zealand. Q & A to follow. All films directed by queer South Asian filmmakers. The event will be held at The SF LGBT Community Center/Rainbow Room, 1800 Market @ Octavia Street. Queeriosity & The Monster Debut - In Celebration of the Next Generation of Queer Youth Writers
In support of the next generation of queer youth writers, Queeriosity & The Monster Debut will bring together established writers and youth poets of Youth Speaks. Curated by Joel Barraquiel Tan debuting his first book of poetry, MONSTER, out on Noise Press, the evening will feature readings from the selected works of Joel Tan, Philip Huang, Alfred Arteaga, Maiana Minahal, and Jaime Cortez by the authors themselves, and a preview of the soon-to-be published works of the Youth Speaks Small Press Project from emerging writers Chinaka Hodge, Stephen Pickens, Eli Marienthal, Gabe Crane, and Tim Arevalho. Interlaced with musical intermissions, this event also features Lolan Sevilla of Flip Dyke poets, and Tim'm from DeepDikCollective. Presented by Youth Speaks. www.youthspeaks.org. NQAF's producing entity, the Queer Cultural Center (Qcc), is a multiracial community building organization that fosters the artistic, economic and cultural development of San FranciscoÕs queer arts community. Qcc's programs promote the careers of LGBT artists, and serve queer and non-queer audiences alike.
