Queer Words: Poetry, Prose and Spoken Performance

(SAN FRANCISCO)—The National Queer Arts Festival 2001 features dozens of celebrated and emerging writers and performers in this yearıs Festival including Alice Walker, Dorothy Allison, Randall Kenan, Forrest Hamer, Sini Anderson, James Green, and Eileen Myles.

The NQAF opens on June 1 with authors Alice Walker, Dorothy Allison and Jewelle Gomez, who grace the stage at the newly renovated Womenıs Building, 3543 18th St, for a stellar evening of readings from published and soon-to-be published works, followed by close conversation between the authors and the audience. This event is a benefit for the Queer Cultural Centerıs Lesbian Writerıs Fund; wine and hors dıoeuvres will be served. Admission is $25-$50 sliding scale.

On Saturday, June 2, also at the Womenıs Buildling, the NQAF throws a party for the release of Sister Spitıs latest CD, Greatest Spits, (Mr. Lady Records) with performances by a dozen artists from Sister Spitıs Ramblinı Road Show, a national all-girl performance group that has been touring the U.S. and Canada for the past five years. The new CD is a collection of over six years of Sister Spit spoken word history. Featured Sister Spitters this evening include Sini Anderson, Marci Blackman, Beth Lisick, Eileen Myles, and Michelle Tea. Admission is $7-$10 sliding scale.

On June 3, at SomArts, 934 Brannan St, Intercourse: A Sex and Gender Spoken Word Recipe for Revolution. Intersex, Transgender, Transsexual, and Genderqueer People Speak Their Truths showcases a dynamic evening of spoken word. Intercourse features writers and activists Thea Hillman, Kristi Bruce, Cooper Lee Bombardier, Kassy Kayiatos, Marcus Rene Van, Max Valerio, James Green, and Red Jordan Arobateau. Admission is $5-$50 sliding scale.

On Wednesday, June 6 the Jon Sims Center, 1519 Mission St, hosts An Evening of Fiction with Randall Kenan and R. Zamora Linmark. Prize-winning African-American writer Randall Kenan, author of the novel A Visitation of Spirits, is (according to Dorothy Allison) "the hope and future of Western literature." Kenan is joined by Fulbright Scholar and recipient of the 2000 N.E.A fellowship in poetry R. Zamora Linmark for an intimate evening of readings and discussion. And on Wednesday, June 13, also at the Jon Sims Center, come enjoy An Evening of Poetry with Forrest Hamer and D.A. Powell. Forrest Hamer is the author of Call & Response (Alice James, 1995), winner of the Beatrice Hawley Award, and a finalist for the Bay Area Book Reviewers Association Award. Doug Powell is the author of Tea (Wesleyan, 1998) and Lunch (Wesleyan, 2000). Admission for each event is $5-$10 sliding scale.

On June 10, Sini Anderson, performance poet and Sister Spit cofounder, returns to the Womenıs Building for a unique multi-media literary event where she will be premiering six new spoken word pieces in collaboration with local sound artist Kadet Kuhne and photographer Sara Seinberg. Sini has invited two of her biggest inspirations to perform with her on this night, local hero and novelist Kris Kovick and from New York, the poet and novelist Eileen Myles, who will be reading from her novel Cool for You and her upcoming book of poems, Skies. Admission is $15-$20 sliding scale.
