Walker, Hamer and Kenan:
African American Artists Featured In This Years' Festival

(SAN FRANCISCO)—The National Queer Arts Festival (NQAF) is proud to present literary readings and performances by numerous African-American artists representing a diverse spectrum of experience, vision and creative imagination.

On Friday June 1, at the newly renovated San Francisco Women's Building, (3543 18th St @ Valencia), the NQAF hosts an evening of reading, wine and discussion with Alice Walker. The Pulitzer Pride winning author will share the stage with fellow writers Jewelle Gomez and Dorothy Allison, (author of Bastard Out of Carolina). Walker, who has been lauded for now classic novels such as The Color Purple, and Temple of My Familiar, will be reading from published and soon to be published work.

Two more noted authors will be featured in this year's festival. On Wednesday, June 6 at the Jon Sims Center for the Arts, 1519 Mission in SF, Randall Kenan, the author of the luminous novel, A Visitation of Spirits, and most recently of the journalistic account, Walking on Water: Black American Lives at the Turn of the Twenty-First Century, will read with R. Zamora Linmark, who received last years' NEA fellowship in poetry. And the following week, on June 13, also at the Sims Center, Forrest Hamer will read his work with fellow poet D.A. Powell. Hamer is the author of Call & Response, and his work has appeared in numerous journals and literary publications.

For those who want a walk on the wild side, don't miss the exciting fifth anniversary of the audience favorite, Liquid Fire—the annual performance dedicated to the exploration, reclamation and celebration of the erotic power of lesbians of color. In this year's show, Nasty, a cast of over 20 women of color perform burning hot spoken word, music, song, and dance. Veronica C. Combs, an accomplished producer, director, dancer, and choreographer began Liquid Fire to counteract the historic sexual oppression and stigmatization of women of color. There will be ten performances over the course of three weekends, running from June 15- June 30 at SomArts, 934 Brannan at 8th St.

The National Queer Arts Festival is a series of cultural events, exhibitions, performances, and interpretive programs organized by The Queer Cultural Center and Harvey Milk Institute.
