(SAN FRANCISCO)—The fourth annual National Queer Arts Festival, a series of cultural programs, exhibitions, and performances organized by The Queer Cultural Center and Harvey Milk Institute, features over 40 events at various venues in San Francisco from June 1 to July 4. This year boasts a diverse program of opera, theater, dance, film, painting, photography, spoken word, and new media from established and emerging queer artists from around the world.

This yearıs Festival kicks off on June 1 with our Opening Night Gala, a stellar evening of wine, reading, and discussion with celebrated authors Alice Walker, Dorothy Allison, and Jewelle Gomez at the newly renovated Womenıs Building.

Highlights this year include the world premiere of the provocative opera, Wuornos, by wunderkind composer Carla Lucero; the hilarious new show Higher Highs, Lower Lows from comedian Marga Gomez; and the luscious Annie Sprinkle relating Herstory of Porn. Local spoken word heroes Sister Spit present the release of their new CD, Greatest Spits. And donıt miss playwright Terrence McNally, on Wednesday, June 13 at the New Conservatory Theatre, in an intimate lecture and discussion about his gay life in the theater.

Exciting imports: East meets West with the photographs of Lesbian ConneXion/s, images of and by European lesbians; and British puppeteer and filmmaker Barry Purves will screen five of his short and sexy animated films including his most recent, Achilles.

More to look out for: esteemed authors Randall Kenan and Forrest Hamer stir the literary mix. Community unity is the star of Intercourse, revolutionary readings with transgender and intersex writers. Bay Area artist Lenore Chinn unveils an exhibition of new paintings featuring the celebrated Portrait of Bernice Bing.
