Artist’s Description:

Us in the Mirror is an endeavor of Scenarios USA and interactive art installation addressing the realities of LGBTQ youth of color and gender and sexuality socialization. Created by 9 youth with Scenarios USA Youth Leadership and Engagement Coordinator Ricardo Gamboa and artist May Anuntarungsun, these 9 youth interviewed queer youth of color and analyzed their own gender and sexual identities and socialization. The four posters here are the result of that inquiry. Barbie dolls, board games, children’s books, and a myriad of young people’s clothing and objects came under the lens in understanding the social conditioning of gender norms and ideas of sexuality. The re-appropriation of these instruments and revision of them creates new tools for educating children and young people about the possibilities of gender and sexuality.

The work in the exhibition was created by artists: Pablo Arbelaez, Linda Armstrong, Emmanuel Martinez, Sarita Nauth, Kaitlynn Stamoulis, Hery Tobon, Joel Torres, Nancy Romero, Shanique Rowe.

The installation for QIY was proposed and coordinated by Ricardo Gamboa.
