'North Beach Dazzlers'
photo series
Alix P. Shedd & Christopher Carroll

Taking initial inspiration from obscure early 80's comic heroine, "The Dazzler", Chris suggested a 'girl-gang on roller skates' shoot in Chinatown's alleyways to Alix. From this early concept, and drawing from many of her own eclectic influences, Alix meticulously styled the image of the gang, and hand-crafted and reconstructed many original pieces for the shoot. Together, they created a back-story for a lesbian roller-skate gang: The North Beach Dazzlers. Punk & New Wave makeup combines with 50's tough-guy hairstyling all by Erin Gallagher, drawing from the same elements influencing the fashion in the shoot. The concept also gives a nod to the history of lesbians in North Beach, most notably in the 1950's.

This project stands as a testament to the collaborative nature of photography as an art medium. We each draw influence from the expressive identities of queer people in our personal lives and in history, as well as the many ways queer culture has seeped into popular culture.

Alix P. Shedd is a visionary artist who dreams big and won't let go. A transgendered person driven by panic over present times, she wanders through imagined pasts and futures where everything is a little simpler, and a lot more flamboyant. Gender more fluid, expressive. And everyone extraordinarily gay. These wanderings seep out into her work; she builds set/home installations and produces and styles photo shoots based on them. Her entire life is queer performance.

Christopher Carroll considers art a community effort, and endeavors to give voice to queer stories in much of his work. Photographing this project, he drew from a variety of influences: 80's comics, West Side Story, Derek Jarman's Jubilee. He had a blast working on it, too. He has worked in a variety of media: photography, painting, comics, illustration, video - and with a wide variety of talent: including directors Encyclopedia Pictura, filmmaker Micaela O'herlihy, and musician Justin Winokur, among many others.

Chris and Alix have worked on large production shoots on their own, and since last June have done many smaller shoots together. This project is their first large production shoot completed together.

Two of the models in the shoot are queer artists in their own right. Najva Sol is a queer picture-taker, poem-writer & art-party organizer. Among her inspirations are glitter, adventure, skin, scandal, and smut. Viktor Dazzle is a performance artist, sex worker, tattoo artist, animal lover, seamstress/fabric goddess and traveling trans-queer from all over the world.
