Artist's Statement

This comic is a creative nonfiction imagination of a a private "FTM get-together." In 1986, organizer Louis Sullivan and other transsexual men met and exchanged ideas in order to create the now-burgeoning modern FTM community in the Bay. After reading relevant diaries on file at the San Francisco Public Library, I imagined what a conversation among a group of FTMs might look like in a time before there was much written or broadly known about female-to-male transsexualism. They argue about sex, homosexuality, and try to find common ground. Desire is the crux of Louis Sullivan's private writings, many of which detail his sexual fantasies and desire for other men. This fictional narrative is my gift to his ghost: a hot, eager young FTM who looks up to him and wears a motorcycle jacket. RIP Louis!
